About

Pura Vida Eco Retreat in Jalisco, Mexico recognized the detrimental impact of its outdated website on both its success and revenue streams. The website was experiencing limited online visibility, a bounce rate of 82%, and a heavy dependence on external booking platforms like Airbnb and BookRetreats, the retreat faced significant profit loss due to commissions and fees.

Task

The retreat aimed to improve its SEO performance, drive more direct bookings, and reduce the high bounce rate through a website redesign, thereby maximizing revenue and decreasing reliance on third-party platforms.

Competitive Analysis

Before redesigning Pura Vida Eco Retreat’s website, it was crucial to understand the competitive landscape to identify industry trends, best practices, and areas of opportunity. 

By conducting a competitive analysis, we aimed to gain insights into how top retreat centers worldwide and in Mexico presented themselves online and how they engaged with their audience.

Drawing from the minimalist design trends observed in the analysis and the natural beauty captured in the center’s photographs, I curated several colour palettes for stakeholders to consider. Each palette aimed to evoke a feeling of tranquillity and authenticity, in line with the brand’s ethos. By involving stakeholders in the selection process, we ensured that the chosen palette resonated with Pura Vida Eco Retreat’s vision and objectives, laying the groundwork for a visually captivating and cohesive website experience.

  1. Visual Trends: Video content, particularly showcasing spa experiences and scenic views, influenced the decision to incorporate high-quality videos in the content strategy to increase engagement.

  2. Content Organization: Clear navigation, with dedicated pages for features like food and activities, was emphasized to improve user experience.

  3. Communication Channels: Direct messaging options and mailing lists for newsletters were common with these top competitors, guiding the implementation of similar channels to increase direct traffic conversions.

  4. Design Trends: Trends uncovered among the competitors included large images with text overlays and minimalist logos, influencing the website’s clean and visually appealing layout.

Results

Increased Online Traffic: The website experienced a remarkable 32% increase in online traffic, indicating improved visibility and engagement with potential visitors.

Boost in Bookings: Direct bookings through the website saw a substantial 50% increase, reflecting enhanced user experience and conversion optimization.

Bounce Rate Decrease: The redesign of the hero page led to a remarkable decrease in the bounce rate from 82% to 17%, resulting in improved user engagement and website performance.

Accelerated Bookings: Within one month of the redesign, the retreat center experienced full bookings, predominantly generated from leads generated from increased online traffic.

Competitive Insights: Insights gained from the competitive analysis informed strategic decisions, allowing Pura Vida Eco Retreat to adopt successful strategies and keywords used by top retreat centers, contributing to its own success.
